Juniata River 8-30-2023

8/30-31/23
The river was just about perfect. Temp, weather and depth were all favorable to catching smallies.
With the Newport bridge in the background, we were ready to rig and get to fishing. Didn't have a bunch of time so we had to make the best of it.
Mixture of clouds and sun. We didn't get on the water till close to 1100 hrs and it seemed we hit the end of the bite.
We got a bunch of small ones and missed a bunch more but that only shows that the river and the fish reproduction is in good shape.
Yep, spinners all day. The only downer was the grass in the water. It got to the point that you couldn't cast and retrieve without bringing in a bunch of…
Yeah, I was getting the little ones too but a fish is a fish. It was still fun.
This was about the average size. They seemed much larger when they hit. Pound for pound they seem to be the best fighting fish around.
Then another little one.
Yup, Gary did seem to catch more.
But here and there, I got a few too.
Wonder how much better it would have been if we could have gotten on the water a couple of hours earlier.
A juvenile. The future looks good for this stretch of river.
And yes, we missed a few. Some hits that didn't hook up and others that threw the hook before getting to the boat.
This was the nicest fish of the day.
But this one wasn't all that bad either. Is there really a bad fish??? I think not!
The tell tale grass in the boat. I really got frustrating.
Frustrating or not, we fished on...
Wild flowers were out completing a beautiful picture. I did try a fly rod...with no success. Must be doing something wrong.
